BREAKING: Atiku Welcomes Senator Natasha’s Return to Senate After Office Reopening

On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took to X (formerly Twitter) to express strong support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following the reopening of her office at the National Assembly.

In a message that mixed relief with condemnation, Abubakar described the development as a victory for democracy and a sign that collective resistance can overcome authoritarianism.

“It is reassuring that the voice of reason has prevailed at last with the unsealing of the office of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” Abubakar wrote. “Though the precious time denied the people of Kogi Central in the Senate can never be reclaimed, this struggle has not been in vain. It has proven, once again, that when we stand together, we can triumph over tyranny.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, resumed duties at the National Assembly on Tuesday after a six-month suspension marked by political controversy and legal wrangling.

Her office was officially reopened by the sergeant-at-arms, effectively bringing an end to a period characterized by accusations of legislative overreach and silencing of dissent.

The senator has since spoken out about what she described as degrading treatment during her suspension.

While speaking to journalists today, she directly criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of running the chamber in an authoritarian manner.

“Senator Akpabio is not more of a senator than I am. He is not the governor of this place, and he treated me as if I was his servant or domestic staff in his house,” she said while addressing journalists.

Recall that Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate over an altercation with the Senate President as regards the change of her seat during plenary.

In July, a Federal High Court ruled the six months suspension was unconstitutional, urging the Senate to review its disciplinary processes.

Abubakar, in his post, placed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension within a broader pattern of alleged anti-democratic behavior under the Tinubu administration.

He referenced the political crisis in Rivers State, including the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara and state lawmakers, calling them deliberate efforts to suppress opposition and manipulate democratic institutions.

“These are not isolated acts,” Abubakar wrote. “They are deliberate markers of the Tinubu administration’s strategy as 2027 approaches: to subvert our hard-earned democracy and compromise the will of the people at any cost.”

He concluded with a vow: “We shall do everything legitimate and within the bounds of the law to protect our democracy, defend the sovereignty of the people’s mandate, and rescue our nation from the grip of authoritarianism.”
