According to a report by DAILY POST on Tuesday 9th June 2026, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has rejected allegations that his political partnership with Peter Obi was designed to weaken the opposition and pave the way for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso described the claims as misleading, insisting that the NDC was established to offer Nigerians a credible alternative focused on development and good governance.

The former Kano State governor said both he and Obi share common objectives in key sectors such as education, agriculture, and human capital development, adding that their collaboration is driven by a commitment to national progress rather than political manipulation.

Using a Hausa proverb to dismiss the allegations, Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to critically examine political narratives before accepting them as facts.

He noted that the NDC has continued to record a surge in membership since its emergence, describing the growth as evidence of increasing public confidence in the party’s vision.

Kwankwaso also addressed reports of friction between supporters of the NDC and those loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; He maintained that he has never encouraged attacks on Atiku and expressed confidence that the former vice president would not support hostility against the NDC.

According to him, tensions between supporters of both camps are largely fueled by individuals seeking to create division within the opposition.

On concerns over the relevance of the vice-presidential office, Kwankwaso said Obi had assured him that the position would play a significant role in governance if elected; He explained that the arrangement would involve the vice president taking on meaningful responsibilities aimed at advancing national development.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate further revealed that he accepted the running mate position in line with Nigeria’s power-sharing principle, which currently favours the South holding the presidency.

Kwankwaso expressed confidence that Obi would honour an understanding to serve a single term before power rotates back to the North, describing the former Anambra governor as a man of integrity who would keep his promise.
