Ex-Hostages and Families Gather at Western Wall, Pray for Captives’ Release During Selichot

At the Western Wall, a poignant “selichot” prayer event unfolded ahead of Rosh Hashanah, which commences at sunset on Monday, September 22, 2025.

According to a report by The Times of Israel on September 21, 2025, the Hostage and Missing Families Forum reported that former hostages and relatives of those still held captive in Gaza gathered for this solemn occasion.

The ‘selichot’ service, a series of penitential and supplicatory prayers, is traditionally recited nightly between midnight and dawn in the lead-up to Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, observed on October 1-2, 2025.

Sephardi Jews begin these prayers a month before Rosh Hashanah, while Ashkenazi Jews start on the Saturday night prior.

Among the participants was Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan remains a hostage in Gaza.

She placed a heartfelt note in the Western Wall, expressing her fervent prayer, she asks God for the safe return of the 48 hostages to Israel and for IDF soldiers to come back safely to their homes, concluding with the affirmation, “The people of Israel live.”

The event also saw the presence of captivity survivors Ilana Gritzewsky and Noga Weiss, freed in November 2023, alongside Dani Miran, father of hostage Omri Miran, highlighting the personal stakes of those attending.

Concurrently, a parallel ‘selichot’ service took place at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv, underscoring the widespread call for the hostages’ release.

The ongoing crisis involves 48 individuals held by terror groups in Gaza, including 47 abducted during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which saw 251 people taken.

Of these, at least 26 are confirmed dead by the IDF, their bodies still held, while 20 are believed to be alive.

Israeli officials have expressed grave concerns for the well-being of two others.

Additionally, the body of an IDF soldier killed in 2014 remains in captivity.
