Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has delivered a scathing assessment of Chelsea’s defensive duo Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo, questioning their ability to take the club back to the very top of European and domestic football.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor acknowledged the qualities of both defenders but argued they are not the calibre required to challenge for the Premier League or the Champions League. “I look at Chalobah and Tosin. I think they’re very good defenders, but they’re going to get you top four season after season. They are not going to win you a Premier League. They are not going to win you a Champions League,” he stated.
His comments come in the aftermath of Chelsea’s latest setback in Europe, where the backline struggled to cope with elite-level attackers. Agbonlahor highlighted the struggles against the pace and movement of Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, and Harry Kane, noting that the defensive pairing looked overwhelmed when tested by world-class opposition.
