BREAKING: Tragic Fire at Afriland Towers Claims 10 Lives, United Capital Reports Six Staff Fatalities

According to a report in PM News on Thursday 18th September, the human toll from the devastating fire at Afriland Towers on Lagos Island has risen to 10, following confirmation from United Capital Plc that six of its staff members perished in the incident.

The company’s disclosure on Thursday came less than 24 hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) announced that four of its personnel also lost their lives in the inferno, which ripped through the landmark eight-storey office complex on Broad Street.

According to preliminary reports, the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the inverter room located in the basement of the building. Within minutes, thick plumes of smoke had spread through multiple floors, trapping scores of workers. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of chaos, with employees frantically smashing windows and clambering for safety as the fire intensified.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, supported by the Federal Fire Service, battled to bring the situation under control. Nine people were rescued alive during the operation, with five revived at the scene and four others rushed out unconscious.

United Capital, in a heartfelt statement, mourned the death of its six staff members, describing the tragedy as a blow that has left the organization “with an immeasurable void.” The firm also disclosed that arrangements are underway to hold a memorial service in honor of the deceased employees.

“The loss of our colleagues is a painful one that words cannot capture. Their dedication and contributions to our organization will never be forgotten,” the company noted.

Meanwhile, uncertainty still lingers over the final casualty figure. Eyewitnesses insist that “not everyone made it out alive,” though officials have yet to release a comprehensive account of the losses. Attempts to reach the Lagos State Fire Service and other emergency agencies for further updates were unsuccessful as of press time.

The Afriland Towers fire has since sparked fresh concerns about workplace safety standards, emergency preparedness, and the adequacy of firefighting infrastructure in high-rise buildings across Lagos. Families of victims, survivors, and colleagues are now left to grapple with the painful aftermath of one of the deadliest fire outbreaks in the city in recent years.
