The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended officers for their alleged involvement in unprofessional conduct with inmates at a custodial centre in Yobe State.
The Service said the suspension takes immediate effect and would remain in force pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation.
The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) Chairman and Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after receiving the preliminary investigation report.
He reiterated that allegations of misconduct within any agency under the Board would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
“The Service service maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates”, he said.
The Minister warned that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with extant regulations.
Controller-General of the Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, assured the public of the NCoS’ commitment to professionalism, integrity and adherence to the rule of law.
“All correctional facilities nationwide would continue to operate in line with established laws, ethical standards and operational procedures”, he assured.
Recall that it was widely reported that at the office of the Nigerian Correctional Service, (NCOS), Yobe Command, Assistant Superintendent of Correctional Services (ASC II), Sani Saleh-Bodejo, allegedly raped and impregnated an inmate, Blessing Sunday.
The officer in question was also accused of raping another inmate identified as Salma.
