The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, has announced that no fewer than 9,600 teachers have so far registered for the state’s upcoming competency test.
The Executive Chairman of the Board, Professor Haruna Musa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the Board’s preparations for the assessment.
He said the test is designed to identify the specific training needs of teachers in order to strengthen their skills and improve learning outcomes across the state.
According to him, 12,000 teachers are expected to register before the exercise is concluded.
Professor Haruna noted that the initiative aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s “12-Point Agenda,” which prioritises reforms in the education sector. He added that the state government has continued to invest heavily in upgrading educational infrastructure to support quality learning.
He expressed concern that more than 70 per cent of the 9,600 registered teachers have never benefitted from any capacity-building programme since their employment, some with over 15 years in service.
After the examination, he said, teachers will be classified into three categories: Group A – teachers with both knowledge and teaching skills; Group B – teachers with adequate knowledge but inadequate teaching skills; Group C – teachers lacking both knowledge and teaching skills.
Professor Haruna stressed that the classification will guide the Board in designing tailored training programmes to enhance professionalism and boost education standards in Jigawa State.
