Wike revokes Apo–Karshi road contract, re-awards project under emergency arrangement

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cancelled the long-stalled Apo–Karshi Road contract earlier awarded to Kakatar CE Limited, transferring it to a new construction firm under an emergency procurement process.

Wike announced the move on Thursday in Abuja after inspecting several key road projects, including the Karu–Customs–CBN Road, the Gishiri–Katampe link, and the Apo–Wasa carriageway. He said the decision followed the previous contractor’s repeated inability to deliver, noting that critical infrastructure must not be undermined by politics or delay.

According to the minister, the new contractor engaged for the project has demonstrated the necessary capacity and the road will soon be formally flagged off for accelerated construction.

Wike also disclosed that work has begun on the newly awarded Kubwa–Bwari road, which is expected to improve connectivity within the FCT.

At the Karu axis, the minister addressed concerns from residents whose properties have been marked for demolition to pave way for the road project. He assured them that the FCT Administration would provide full compensation for all verified structures.

Wike stressed that while emotional reactions to demolition notices are expected, the broader public interest must prevail. He added that the roads inspected are among the projects earmarked for commissioning during activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third-year anniversary in office.
